When shopping for a used car, there are so many decisions to make. What brand, what model, what year? SUV or sedan? It’s an important decision to make, as an automobile will likely be the largest purchase you’ll make, second only to buying a home.

More and more buyers are choosing to purchase their used cars from a car dealership rather than from an individual, and there are some solid reasons that this may be your best option.

Dealer Reputation

Car dealers put in a lot of effort to build and protect their reputations. While no one complaint will destroy their standing in the community, they still want to make sure that they have dealt with you honestly and that you’re happy with your purchase.

An individual may seem to be dealing with you in a straightforward manner, but their livelihood is not dependent on treating you fairly.

Better Quality Used Cars

You have a better chance of finding a selection of good quality used cars at a dealership. When a car is placed on their lot, it’s probably been closely inspected by the dealer’s service department. If minor repairs were needed to pass this inspection, they’ll have been completed. If something is seriously wrong with the car, the dealer will have sent the car to an auction lot, rather than risk selling a bad car.

Certified Used Cars

A certified pre owned car is a used car that comes with a factory warranty. Typically, these are lease returns, fleet cars, or young low mileage models, and they’ve had a rigorous going over by a factory trained mechanic. A genuine certified used car will only be sold at a dealership that sells the same brand of new cars. For example, you won’t find a certified used Jeep at a Toyota dealership. A certified used car will likely have a higher price than one that’s not certified, but they come with warranty coverage and extras, such as roadside assistance during the warranty period.

Warranties

A private seller will not be in a position to give you a warranty. While not all dealership cars come with a free warranty like a certified car, the dealer will usually offer to allow you to purchase an extended warranty so that you have protection from unexpected repairs. The best of these warranties are ones that from the car manufacturer.

Better Opportunities for Negotiation

Often an individual will be very rigid as to the price they want from a used car. This is primarily due to the fact that a private seller thinks that their car is perfect and by trying to negotiate, you’re somehow trying to take advantage. Car dealers know that no car is perfect, and they are more willing to haggle with you on the price

One Stop Shopping

In addition to having an inventory of used cars, and beyond offering a warranty, a dealership is a ready source for financing options. This will save you trying to arrange your own financing, and the dealership can often offer better terms than your local bank or credit union. The best part about dealership financing is that you can complete the entire sales transaction from looking at the car to driving home in it in a matter of hours, not days. Compare that to buying from a private seller, which may involve looking for financing and having to bring a cashier’s check or cash to the seller.

Paperwork

Another advantage to the dealership is that they handle all of the paperwork required by the local motor vehicle agency. A private sale will likely force you to make a visit to the DMV.

Tax Advantages

When you trade in your old car for the new one, you qualify for a sales tax savings. When you purchase a car from an individual, the sales tax will be based on the entire value of the car. If you trade in a car, the tax is based only on the difference between sales price and trade in value.

It’s your choice to purchase a car anywhere you’d like. However, in terms of variety, financial benefits, honesty, warranties, tax savings, and convenience, the best choice is a car dealership.
