Comfort Comparison

The Terrain seats five adults in comfortable, supportive seats. You’ll find some cheap-looking plastic on the doors and dashboard, but most materials throughout the cabin are attractive and upscale. The top three trims trade out standard cloth seats for perforated leather upholstery.

The Escape has a sleek, athletic design that seats five. The cabin features some cheap-looking hard plastics, but the seats are very comfortable. Upholstery ranges from cloth to synthetic leather to genuine leather, depending on the trim.

Cargo Space

While the folding front passenger seat makes it easy to carry long items in the Terrain, the overall cargo space is below-average at only 29.6 cubic feet. Fold down the rear seats to expand the cargo area to 63.3 cubic feet.

Not many other compact SUVs can rival the Escape’s cargo space, boasting an impressive 37.5 cubic feet of room behind the rear seats. This expands to 65.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

Engine, Performance & Efficiency

GMC eliminated its upgraded engine in 2022, leaving the Terrain with the same 170-horsepower 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine on all trims. While decent around town, this engine isn’t the most energetic at high speeds. The nine-speed automatic transmission is also slow to shift. The standard configuration gets an estimated 25 miles per gallon in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. All-wheel drive gets 25/28 mpg city/highway.

The Escape offers solid performance with a standard 181-horsepower turbocharged three-cylinder engine. You can also upgrade to a 250-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Both engine types are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The base engine gets 28/34 mpg city/highway, which drops to 26/31 for AWD. The upgraded engine, which only comes in AWD, is the least fuel efficient at 22/31 mpg city/highway.
